Josie's Massage Therapy Massage Therapy in Bishops Stortford and Surrounding Area

Welcome to SMFR Therapy

Self-Myofascial Release (SMFR) Therapy is a gentle, practical way to support easier movement, reduce everyday tension, and help you feel more connected to your body.

In SMFR, you use simple tools such as therapy balls, foam rollers, and peanut rollers to apply gentle pressure to muscles and connective tissue. This helps you notice areas of tension, soften tightness, and create a calmer sense of ease in your body.

With regular practice, SMFR may help to support joint mobility, flexibility, muscle recovery, relaxation, and body awareness. It is designed to be accessible, self-directed, and easy to adapt to your own comfort level.

How to Join Us

  • Group Classes: Ideal if you would like a guided, whole-body practice in a supportive group setting. Each class focuses on a particular area while still treating the body as a connected system, helping you notice how releasing one area can influence movement and comfort elsewhere.

The Benefits: Reconnect and Restore

A key part of this practice is learning to listen to your body from the inside. This is known as interoception: your ability to sense what is happening internally, including pressure, tension, breath, movement, and comfort.

As you become more aware of subtle physical feedback, you can make better choices about pressure, pace, and position. Over time, this can help ease everyday tightness, support flexibility, calm the nervous system, and give you practical tools to care for your body between sessions.

What to Expect in Class

Classes are based on the idea that the body works as one connected network. The technical term for this is biotensegrity. It means that tension in one area can affect how another area feels or moves, so a session may explore related parts of the body rather than only the place that feels tight.

We move slowly, with clear guidance and options throughout. You can adjust the pressure, change position, pause, or ask questions at any time. Each class combines SMFR techniques with gentle stretches and light muscle contractions to support comfort, mobility, and confidence in movement.
